Meeting 19

Today meeting is roughly the same as the previous: ANALYSIS MORE GRAPHS AND GRAPHS.

But at least for today, we managed to complete some of our cross-referencing of survey results. We had split the work the previous meeting and each of us were tasked to do a question each. Today we came together to discuss the results and at the same time, explaining to one another of our findings so that we understood all the results.

In this way, we would also be able to identify mistakes that we made and give better recommendations to the respective analysis so that it would be presented in a better way.

Meeting 18

Today's agenda of the day was to continue with our survey analysis and at the same time, compile our survey data analysis for our cross-referencing of certain findings and results.

So after class, the whole team went to the library to do our work. We stayed back till around 6 plus 7 and spent alot of time doing the compiling our survey results for the cross-referencing. We also managed to complete some of them and therefore, started to come out with suggested answers and analysis so that we would be refreshed with these when we eventually start on them.

Peace out.

Meeting 20

Today's meeting with Chronos was to check up on our progress in our FYP report. Despite many analysis and cross-referencing in our report, Chronos felt that there was something missing from our report and wanted us to either edit or add in further details:
  1. Cross-referencing among our 3 concepts
  2. Justification and rationale for our 3 concepts
  3. Editing of headings and subtitles in our content page
  4. Separation of analysis and recommendations
Initially, we had put down our recommendations right after each analysis and Chronos wanted us to change that and mention the recommendations for each concept after the different analysis and cross-referencing of each concept

Meeting 17

Today was a short meeting with Chronos, who wanted to check on the team's progress as a whole.

He gave us a few advices on the report analysis and how it should be done and also suggested to add a few things in our report here and there. But most importantly, he gave us a few advises on how the analysis should be done and certain pointers on the type of cross-referencing that is more important to include.

Meeting 16

There were still some survey questions that were yet to be compiled previously so today's agenda was to touch-up on the survey results and at the same time, construct a graph for each question so that it could be used later on during our analysis.

After some time, we managed to complete the survey questions, results and the graphs. However, we realized that we needed to do cross-referencing of the gathered survey results and left out certain results that needed the surveys. We lacked certain information and graphs concerning the part on cross-referencing.

This process would take quite some time as we needed to look through our surveys once again to gather certain results that we had hoped for. As such, we wasted no time and started to split the surveys again and each one of us were allocated to certain information to find out and then we could all compile the survey results required for the cross-referencing.

Meeting 15

Today's meeting was held at a really interesting venue, SMU! Yes though it was hot and stuffy, we managed to accomplish we had planned.

The agenda of the day:
  • complete and touch-up on last minute changes of allocated survey results
  • compile all our results on a shared excel sheet
However, we encountered quite a few problems too.

  1. Delegates did not take the surveys seriously and some questions were either left out or done without any consideration
  2. Certain questions which required them to rank the options, were redundant as they ticked the options instead, causing confusion among our survey results.
As a result, we were only able to complete exactly 120 surveys that were done properly instead of the original 150 that was done in the beginning. We were quite disappointed but nevertheless, we managed to compile all our survey results!!!!!

Meeting 14

Today i wasn't able to come for meeting due to certain commitments.

However, i gather from our team-mates that today's main agenda was to come up with our team's draft report format. After that they were done, it was then send to Chronos, who vented through and and gave certain advices to change some parts of our report format.

My team-mates informed me that they could start compiling our Literature review, Synopsis, Our Introduction, etc. Therefore, i made sure that my part was all well-done and ready and sent it to them.

The team also split the survey results so that we could all compile them when we meet during the next FYP meeting. Our next FYP was to be scheduled on the following week where we would come together to compile all our survey results so that we could start on our analysis of them.

Meeting 13

Today our team went to Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre to conduct surveys. However, we were greeted with bad news once again. The conferences of the event had not started and most of the delegates would arrive the following day. The event organisers were still preparing for the event proper the following day.

As such, the team suggested going down to Singapore Expo where we could try our luck at events there. When we were there, the exhibition that we went to was:

* Home Décor Exhibition

It wasn't packed with people but still we tried our best to conduct surveys with the limited number of delegates that were there that day. We were almost done with 150 over surveys and felt that it was of a sizable amount and decided that it was enough to compile our results. We decided that we should meet the following Wednesday to start compiling them.

Meeting 12

Today's event: Carbon Forum Asia 2008

Today is a bad day again for us. When we arrive at the event venue, the entrance area was cordoned off and we couldn't enter the exhibition hall. As such, we approached a staff that was on duty there to seek permission to conduct our surveys in the exhibition hall. He then referred us to the event organizer, who declined our request as he felt that their own staff had already conducted their own event surveys and that the delegates might feel irritated when we approach them to do our own survey. Furthermore, he mentioned that some of the delegates gave feedback that it was still far too early into the event to respond to surveys.

We were also told that our survey was quite similar in style to theirs as their survey were also in relating to the environment. They felt that it might pose as a competition to theirs and therefore, declined our request to enter the exhibition hall.

So, all in all, the feeling of total rejection felt like crap and we were also worried due to the dateline that we had to keep in mind of. Thus, we made plans to meet up the following week to visit events held at Suntec to conduct our surveys as soon as possible.

Meeting 11

Once again, our team were off to conduct surveys, this time at a different venue, Raffles City Convention Centre.
  • Aviation Outlook Asia 2008
We encountered much difficulty today as Aviation Outlook Asia 2008 was the only event that was organised that day and there were no other events being held at Suntec City Convention Centre either. As such, we only managed to complete around 30 surveys and the delegates were either "too busy" or didn't want to have anything to do with surveys that day. Lame.

As such, it wasn't a very productive day for us and we learnt that we should list days to conduct surveys when there are many events that are occuring on the same day so that there is a better chance of us conducting more surveys.

Meeting 10

This is the day. The day when our team headed down to Suntec City Convention Centre to conduct our first surveys. The events that we attended are as following:
  • JEC Asia: 22 Oct – 24 Oct 2008
  • Process CEM Asia 2008: 22 Oct – 24 Oct 2008
Although some of us had no prior experience in doing surveys, we managed to complete 50 surveys in total, quite a feat for us. However, there were some difficulties that we encountered during the course of doing surveys:
  • Delegates who were "too busy" to help us in our surveys
  • Delegates who had difficulty in understanding our survey questions, thus, leaving us to explain each question in a simpler way for them
  • Delegates who did not take the surveys seriously and did not answer to the questions.
But overall, it was a success and most of the delegates that we approached provided us with valuable information and ideas and did the surveys to the best that they could. We are thankful to them for taking the time to do the surveys too.

There were also a few lessons that we learn when we conducted the surveys. We should always try to keep the questions short and sweet and also be patient when these delegates are irritated when attempting survey questions.

Meeting 9

Our plan today is to edit our survey questions and send it to Chronos for the final venting. As requested by him, we made a few changes and went through every question once again to make sure that they were all in relation to our FYP topic and also to make sure that they prove to be useful when we conduct our analysis in the later part of our FYP project.

Our email requests to event organizers to attend their events to conduct surveys were either turned down or were not replied. As such, we had to search through the Uniquely Singapore website to source for more events that we could attend. We then made a new list of potential events that we could attend and tried calling them instead of the conventional email method.

Our attempts proved to be more successful and they were friendly in their response to us. They also wanted to take a look at the survey questions before granting us permission to conduct these surveys. As such, we had "confirmed" events that we could attend and were happily looking forward to going to these events to conduct surveys.

Meeting 8 with Chronos

The purpose of today's meeting is to meeting up with Chronos to discuss about our proposed survey questions and the improvements that were needed to be made.

He told us that we needed to make a few changes:
  • To format and suit our survey questions in relation to our 3 concepts in a clearer way.
  • certain questions to be removed as they were quite redundant and not in relation to our topic and it was not possible to get any analysis out of them
He also brought up certain doubts about the survey questions regarding the profile of the delegates in terms of asking for their gender, age and the number of times they have attended events. He mentioned that as long as we were able to justify why we wanted those questions in, it wasn't much of a problem. We didn't change or remove these questions though as they would come in useful when we wanted to do our analysis and cross reference.

After this, we needed to do certain corrections here and there in our survey questions and send it to Chronos by the week as we planned to visit potential events to conduct our surveys the following week.

Meeting 7

Agenda of the day:

1) To come up with a set of survey questions for delegates

2) To search for events that we could go to and conduct our surveys

We then decided to divide the survey questions into 4 different sectors, in accordance to our 3 Green concepts:

1. General questions relating to our environment
2. Organic food
3. Waste management
4. Paperless

For each section, we came up with around 4 to 5 questions that were not too lengthy and easy to understand.

We also went to the Uniquely Singapore website to search and made a list of potential events in the coming month so that we could conduct our research soon. By having an organized list, we intend to call the event organizers to seek their permission for us to attend the event and conduct surveys at the event venue.

Meeting 6 with Chronos

Earlier on, we have finished our literature review and send it to Chronos for venting. Today's meeting with him was to go through our review and suggest certain improvements to be made.

Some of the pointers that were taken:
  • Format of the literature review
  • To relate the literature review to our project. In this case, how does the literature review help in our FYP project.
  • To include references that we have looked out for during our research.
For my literature review about the efforts made by Suntec City Convention Centre, i did more research into it to try and substantiate the content. I found out more interesting facts about how Suntec has collaborated with Sembcorp to try and cut down on certain resources that could be conserved. I also added on how Suntec encourages its staff to advise event organizers and delegates to cut down on resources during events.

Our team also started to do a headstart on coming out with the survey questions meant for delegates. For each concept, we all went back home with the assignment of having to come up with a few suggested questions.

Meeting 5

Today's agenda was to do up our literature review. We are required to search about information that is related to our project, regarding green concepts in Singapore. Our team managed to split the task and allocated each one of us to research on a specific field and that come together to understand it as a whole.

Jesslyn: General overview on environmental statistics
  • understanding the Green environment in Singapore
  • identifying issues on the environment
  • Justification of choosing our 3 concepts and how they apply to the environment today
Kelye: Waste Management
  • Waste management is one of our 3 main concepts and adequate research has to be done
  • How it has been incorporated and utilized in today's events industry.
Sam: Paperless
  • One of the 3 main concepts and adequate research has to be done
  • To understand about paper wastage and how it has been affecting the environment
  • To understand how it can be incorporated and utilized in today's events industry.

Sham: Organic Food
  • One of the 3 main concepts and adequate research has to be done
  • Understanding the need for organic food and how it benefits people
  • How does organic food help in conserving the environment

Nison: Conference Efforts

For me, i had to research on event venues in Singapore that have been taking stand to conserve the environment and how it helps in doing so. Suntec City Convention Centre, being a popular events venue in Singapore plays a key role in helping Singapore keep up its Green standards.
  • Understanding How Suntec City Convention Centre's efforts in conserving the environment
  • How they step up their plans in conferences and exhibitions
  • Features of the venue that helped to conserve the environment.
From here, each of us were allocated to a duty and did our research in school. We hoped to finish our tasks as soon as possible and come together to compile them and understand them as a team.
