Meeting 4 ( Visit to the National Library )

Today is the day which we will gather information to aid in our literature review. We were supposed to gather as much information about green concepts either within the region or specifically in Singapore and summarise them all into a review.

Mr Chronos had advised us previously that the National Library contained much key information about green concepts. He advised that we could find more of such information in TIMES magazines and newspaper clippings and learn about the recent happenings of the green efforts in events industry. When we were at the library, we were quite unsure of how to go about to start looking for such information. We asked the Librarian there and she suggested that we tried the Sociology and Science section, where they kept books regarding green concepts. However, most of the information we found were regarding mostly foreign countries implementing large scale green initiatives, such as cutting down of trees and conserving the metal industry. There was nothing related to green concepts in the events industry.

After that, we managed to find that the library actually kept the whole periodical publication of TIMES Magazine. We then took the whole stack and distributed among ourselves to search for any related articles that we were looking for. After some time, we managed to gather around 10 articles which were quite relevant for our research. However, our group felt that the related articles were too general in talking about environmentally-friendly methods being implemented. There wasn't any that was directly related to our objective, which was to find out about such methods in the events industry.

However, we were quite satisfied with the search and at least we have found about companies implementing environmental-friendly methods around the world. It could serve as a platform for us to research more in depth in terms of the local aspect in Singapore.

Meeting 3 with Chronos

Our main purpose for today's meeting is to finalise our project outline with Chronos.

Firstly, he gave his comments on our proposed project outline. He mentioned that it was too vague, mainly our objectives. Our concept was also not mentioned in our objectives too. And since we have come up with the 3 ground-breaking green concepts for our project, we should include them in our objectives so that it sets the right directions for our FYP project.

Secondly, he mentioned that we should include a time-line in our project outline. This would enable us to plan our work well and guide us along the days so that we would be on schedule and assign the appropriate tasks for the different days. He also wanted us to include when we would like to have meetings with him around so that he could assist us.

We began to brainstorm more about our project. Our objective was to find out about the perceptions of event organisers and delegates, and therefore, we thought that the best way was to interview them and to conduct mass surveys. However, we lack the contacts to reach out to our target group and the whole experience of getting the surveys and interviews done. Therefore, we discussed and came out with the following ideas:
  • Going down to the STB Tourism Court for Enquiry
  • Searching for events via the STB calendar from the STB website
  • local pro-green events activists websites
  • Going to events itself

After this, we decided that we needed to come up with a survey for both delegates and event organisers. We wanted to know about the perceptions of these delegates towards our 3 groundbreaking Green concepts and their receptivity towards them. As for the event organisers, we wanted them to be informed of such concepts and how they could implement these concepts into their events, and whether these concepts are feasible to their benefits.

Our next task would be to visit the National Library so that we could research more into green concepts within Asia and collect more related information. Byebye.

Meeting 2

Our main objective for the day was to touch up on our project outline and submit to Chronos for verification and advice.

Agenda for the day:
  • Team introduction and justification of our FYP topic.
  • Key objectives of our project.
  • Scope of work covered
    • Determine and gather ground-breaking eco-friendly concepts that are used in conferences and exhibitions
      1. Paperless
      2. Bio-degradable materials being used at events
      3. Food and catering - Organic food
  • Procedure of how an conference is organized
  • Survey of event organisers' and delegates' opinions on our chosen green concepts through at least 3 conferences
  • Methodology
    • Project scope of each member
      • task-breakdown of project for each member
    • Process of obtaining information through
      • surveys
      • research from National Library
      • Online websites
    • Tabulation and evaluation of survey results
    • Analyzing our obtained information as a whole
    • Summary and conclusion of key information
  • Possible limitations
    • Predicated / Pre-mediated
    • Unforeseen challenges that we could face
    • Recovery time for challenges faced
    • Limited amount of resources to certain green practices
  • Work schedule
    • Project objectives
    • Manpower allocation
    • Project deliverables
    • key milestones that needs to be met
Using this framework for our FYP project, we hope to be consistent in our process in completing our FYP project. It provides us with a clear objective and a step-by-step process so that we would not lose track but instead help us by providing a structural approach. Thus, we submitted this project outline to Chronos for further evaluation.

Meeting 1

Today marks the first meeting of our group with Chronos, our advisor. All of us were present and the meeting was held at E65Q.

Our proposed freely chosen FYP topic: Identify eco-friendly methods and concepts and to evaluate the level of acceptance of events organizers and delegates.

Issues that we discussed on:

1) Our FYP topic. Chronos highlighted to us that our FYP topic wasn't that credible enough and we needed to "strengthen" it as it proved to be rather empty and vague. Thus, we discussed on the most suitable topic and came out with the final proposed topic.

2) Our understanding on green concepts. We talked about the various conservation methods and which would be the most valid for our FYP topic.

3)How these Green concepts are implemented into events. We discussed about how event organisers could implemented these green concepts into their events and the how these methods can help save the environment. However, we were only speaking on limited knowledge and we needed to find out more in-depth information to back us up.

Thus, we all decided that we should head to the National Library to do more in-depth research and find out about the current green efforts that are taking place around the world and how event organisers are helping to conserve the environment.
